Jin Jiang East Asia Hotel : mauvais rapport qualité / prix

Jin Jiang East Asia hotelli Shanghai

Hotellin sijainti on erinomainen.

Bienvenidos a China!

East Asia Hotel in the bustle of Shanghai

When my cab from the airport dropped me off a good block away from East Nanjing Rd and the driver pointed me in the direction to walk, I was a little miffed. But a block later I realized there were no vehicles allowed on this crowded pedestrian street and if they were it would be a very slow ride. I got my orientation and found the building where the address indicated the hotel was. What I saw at first were clothing shops, food shops, accesory shops and other retail ventures but in the middle of the building was a sign for East Asia Hotel. Going one flight up, as the sign directed, I cane to the front desk and checked in. I soon learned that when you left the building through the first floor elevator exit, your doors opened to a dress shop and you were surrounded by other retail outlets. East Nanjing Road is definately the place to be if you want to shop or be in the midst of crowds of people. It is definatel lively but fine except for the annoying peddlers trying to sell you watches or toy helicopters or skate wheels to attach to your footwear. The hotel accomodations were fine, a very decent size room and bath with good amenities. The only issue was there were no windows in my room and I'm not sure if any of the rooms had windows. This was more of an issue because during my stay it was overcast and rainy and I never knew if it was raining until I went outside and I refused to buy an umbrella from those annoying street hawkers. I finally did buy an umbrella in another part of town. The location was very good. People's Square with it's park, museums and theaters was only a three minute walk. The Bund and its view of the Pudong skyline was about a fifteen minute walk and the subway was a block or two away. And of course you had the shops and malls and street peddlars of East Nanjing Rd. All in all I would recommend the hotel but I think it good to know some of the quirks that I mention above - or I might have ruined the surprise.

Excellent value

It's well past the expectation of a budget hotel. Its best value lies in its handy location on the Walking Mall, only 7 minutes walk to the subway & People's Square. Service is quite responsive. But there's some smell in my room's toilet from the drainage. Lift service is quite inadequate as there's only one lift. It's definitely my choice of hotel for my next visit.

Very close to the city center and public transport

The hotel is well located for those like to be close to the heart of the city and those like shopping. Internet connection is possible with the cable. The room is large and relatively cheap. The bathroom is clean. My room had almost every possible necessary stuffs. I recomment asking for a room opposite to the side of the main street (Nainjing road) which is too noisy if you wish to sleep long everymorning. In this street are always lots to see and do. The staff are friendly and helpful but they aren't good at English. One negative point was that I couldn't leave my baggage after check-in at the Hotel, as my flight was late evening.

Great Location and Price

The hotel was easy to get to from the train station. The front desk personnel don't have much english but they were okay. The location is fantastic as the People's Square is a short (500m) walk away and all the major subway lines are there. My room was good although there was a stain on the carpet that was a little unusual. All in all, a great place unless you want 4-5 star. It was perfect for me.

Good Location - OK Rooms

This hotel was alright. It is conveniently located on the Nanjing Shopping road, but this means that you will have to walk a block or so to get a taxi, as well as take your luggage to and from one. The entrance to the hotel is actually through what is a few shops during the day. The lobby is on the second floor, with only an elevator door on the ground level to take you up. Check-in was easy enough with me not knowing any Chinese. Since I had checked in late (11:30 PM) they said they had already given my room away, but were able to offer me a complimentary upgrade to a room with a computer in it. The room was kind of sparsely decorated but clean enough. The mattresses were very hard, but the down comforter was nice. My room unfortunately overlooked a back alley instead of Nanjing Rd. The AC worked very well and the bathroom was adequate. Concierge downstairs was of very little help to me. When trying to explain that I wanted to go to the Shanghai Aquarium (which is quite large), it took a good 10 minutes to get my point across and assistance getting a cab. The information she wrote down for me was refused by two drivers, so it wasn't much use at all. Overall, a good location and modest accommodations make this hotel a good deal for the budget traveler. I would stay here again, but would also gladly upgrade to a higher-class hotel for better service and amenities.

Will definitely NOT be staying here again...

This hotel ranks as one of my least favorite hotels ever, and I've stayed at many many hotels (both high end and very low-end hotels). I'm not very picky nor high maintenance, but this hotel really got to me. First off, the service is terrible. They were not friendly at all. When I asked them if they had a map of the city, they said NO and told me to try and find one at the supermarket. They didn't even bother to tell me I can pick one up at the Tourism Information Center which is a 2 minute walk from the hotel. They also gave me a windowless room (felt like a prison w/it's stark bare white walls). They claimed that the room was a courtesy upgrade since I prepaid for the room. They also ran out of hairdryers...the bed was the worst part. It felt like sleeping on boxsprings (you can literally feels the wires digging into your back). The walls in the rooms are super thin so you can hear everything. The only good thing about the hotel is that the room was clean and the location is good. If you don't mind all this, then feel free to stay at this hotel (I guess for the price, I shouldn't complain). But next time I'm in Shanghai, I'll be sure to spend a little more for my comfort and to save myself from the irritation.

You can do much better for the money

Ok so this was probably my fault - but booking a hotel on the Nanjing road was a mistake. It was very overpriced by Shanghai standards, offering the barest essentials of accomodation in a very small room which had clearly seen better days. The Nanjing Rd East is Shanghai's biggest tourist trap. Unless you are looking for western fast food, western designer brands, fake western designer brands, neon signs or street hustlers who make a beeline for you I'd avoid. Shanghai is not a particulary attractive city but there are far better places than this. Yes the Bund is worth a look bit only that. The hotel istself was ok - in fact by western standards for the money it was actually quite reasonable. However this is China where for just a little more money you can find yourself a much better deal. This hotel might suffice for new arrivals who need a place to stay for their first night in Shanghai but other than that don't bother.

Go if you have some knowledge of Mandarin

Directions to this place are not clear -- it is located in the walking mall on Nanjing East Road (nan jing dong lu). Google maps advised me to go to Nanjing West Road ... lost some pocket change due to that mistake taxi ride! Also, advise the taxi driver (if you take one) to East Asia Hotel (do not mention Jin Jiang!) -- that is the name of the hotel from the exterior of the building. The first floor to the hotel resembles a department store -- things for sale (purses, women's clothing). You can either walk up the stairs (by the cigarette counter) or take the elevator. If you have a lot of baggage, take the elevator (about 10 meters past the staircase). The room I had was acceptable. Up on the highest floor, I had lots of sunlight (albeit not facing the back of the building). TV worked; internet worked. Carpets looked like there were the odd cigarette burn (for a non-smoking floor?!) Bedding was clean; beds sank in the middle but I had no problems sleeping at night. Bathroom was probably its weakest point -- definitely require slippers to use it. I would say this hotel is equivalent to a Motel-6 in North America. You're not going to get a really clean room (bring slippers for the shower) but comfortable enough for a seasoned traveller like myself. What are you going to expect for a downtown Shanghai hotel for this price?!

Ottimo hotel posizione centralissima
