Hotel in need of updates

We stayed in two different suites in this resort. Both were in need of updating. The suite on the second floor had floors that made so much noise I was afraid we might fall through to the first floor. This could be a nice resort if they put some money into it. I will say the staff was very nice, the rooms were fairly clean and the hotel was within walking distance of shops and restaurants.

It was great. The room was clean and comfortable. Service was outstanding. Location was good. It was on the beach and walking distance to shopping and dining. We will stay here again.

Great for families!!!

The location was great. The family restaurant across the street was excellent & we got a discount for staying at Pono Kai. If you keep walking north on the main highway, there are many cute shops and restaurants. We had oceanview room so we could see the kids playing down on the beach. If you walk north on the boardwalk, you hit a nice beach where you can lay out, etc. The rooms were clean. The master bedroom had a nice king size bed. The 2nd bedroom had a full size bed & the kids said that it was a little lumpy. The sofa sleeper where our son slept was lumpy as a sofa sleeper gets. There was a little smell to the building but once we got into our room, the smell was not bad. It's just an old complex so it smelled old. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend it to others.

GREAT Hotel for the price.

Pono Kai is an older property that is very well maintained and an excellent bang for your dollar when it comes to traveling with family to Hawaii. My husband is European and I’ve traveled the world over with him in our 26 years together. we LOVED the property! We loved the mature landscape, the cleanliness of our entire condo (A207 - oceanfront), the friendliness of the staff, and the other guests. I was awake and on our balcony every morning by 5:30 am for the spectacular sunrises, to see the locals and tourist out on the walking path getting their morning exercise in - it was fabulous. We loved the chickens and cats - - this property takes care of their cats and has them spayed and neutered and feeds them daily. They are not ferial cats. If you want on onsite spa, shopping, restaurants, and a true 5-Star experience go north to the St. Regis, you want a very nice place to stay for a great price go to Pono Kai. Mahalo – Andrea A.

Excellent location, great for family!

This resort is ideal for a family of 5 like us, the rooms were very spacious (we had a 2 BR/2Baths) and had an excellent ocean front. The best part is the location - withing walking distance from shops, restaurants, groceries, bike rentals, and of course, 10 minutes drive to WalMart and about 15 mins. drive to Cosco, K-Mart, and Macy's! It is also in the middle of the north and south shores - so driving to Waimea and Hanalei is very convenient! The staff were very friendly, and the grounds were well-kept. I would definitely consider this resort again!

For an older resort, it was vary clean and upkeeped . Has everything you need for a plesant vacation. Nolegable and freindly staff.

Clean but dated, good for a night or two

The staff was great, and very accommodating...unfortunately, they don't work in a top notch resort. The Pono Kai was very clean, but a little dated. You can tell the staff takes a lot of pride in their resort, and they do the best they can with what they have. However, the great staff doesn't help the fact that this resort barely has a beach...and you'd be afraid to swim in their rough waters even if it did. You can walk down about 1/2 mile to the public park/beach, where there IS some sand to lay on and the waters are more tame, but that's not always convenient to run back and forth to your room. All in all, this is a good, clean place for a night or two, but it's not on par with a Marriott, Sheraton or Westin. So don't expect too much, and you'll be okay with it.

Pono Kai

The hotel was very nice. The concierge was very nice and helpful. The location was great because shops, markets, restaurants and the ocean were within walking distance (which is great because the island's parking is terrible).

Pono Kai, absolutely superb!!

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Pono Kai/Bluegreen resort. The condo was quite spacious and accomodated much privacy for us as we shared a 2 br, 2 bath with another couple. The location right on the beach was wonderful, and convenient for us to take brief or longer walks. The sunrises were beautiful. The grounds were extremely well kept, and the staff were friendly and considerate. We had absolutely no complaints, and we will likely stay at this resort again in the future!!!

Great Place to stay and good location

We were very impressed with our stay here. Everything was great! Our room, 203F was wonderful, set back from the others, watched the sun come up over the ocean every morning, it was wonderful! The grounds were beautiful and immaculately kept. Staff was helpful and friendly. It was ideally located. I will return to this facility. I highly recommend this place!

Pono Kai - March 2012

Great central location, along the ocean. Units are a little on the run down side, but clean and functional. One of the highlights was easy access to the 4 miles of walking/biking/running path along the ocean. We really appreciated the ability to book the room (depending on availability) for a 6 pm check-out for a small additional cost.

Woe is me!!!

Many maintenence issues, cracks, horrendous squeaks from the floor above, ridiculous rules about checking out equipment - until the tennis courts were dry, you couldn't use croquert, bocce, horseshoes, volleyball - even though those areas were dry, staff knew nothing about plants on the ground, none labeled, lawn equipment going almost every day, all day, poor selection of cookware, too early of a checkout time - 10am. nice looking grounds but only coin operated washer/dryer. pool/hot tub closed too early and not policed. Many people with glass drinks. Did get a quick fix of the remote. Cats and dogs running loose. Not impressed with the dry and overly long orientation. Had to go way out of the way to get beach/pool towels and had to take them back to avoid charges Really need some quality building maintenence people on staff Low water pressure in shower head Quiet flushing toilets Should have book(s) identifying plants, birds, and other creatures

Would stay there again.

This condo is in the perfect location. It's a one hour drive in either direction to the end of the road. The grounds are beautiful and there's plenty of food and shopping within walking distance. There is a beach right there but much better ones on the north shore. The ac is great, but the sea breeze with the windows open is nice too. I would definitely stay there again.

this was a very clean and comfortable resort. very conveniently located to town and walking distance to all necessities. the staff was very friedly and helpful. i would definitely return and recommend this resort to others

Perfect for a family or group

We were very impressed with the room. It was very clean and perfect for 6 people. Two bedrooms and two full baths with a pull out sofa for the kids. Kitchen was fully stocked with everything needed, and a dishwasher. They even supply you with new sponge, soap, paper towels, etc. There is no daily cleaning, so you must make your own bed, but I thought it was better that way. Grills around the property were perfect for BBQ. Beach is right there and okay for a quick swim. Games around property were good for kids (volleyball net, croquet, etc.) Kapaa is more pleasant than Poipu, in our opinion. Everything you need is within a mile. **tip**hit up Costco in Lihue and stock the kitchen for the entire stay. Save a bunch of money instead of eating out. Movies can also be rented at the local grocery store red boxes, and a dvd player is in the room.

Not too shabby!

Overall we were very pleased with our stay! The room was very comfortable and quiet. The pics on the website showed somewhat older decor but, our room seamed to have newer furniture. The only minor bummer was that the resort is right off the Hwy. on the busiest stretch but, you would never know. They have done a nice job with the insulating of the rooms and the property has a nice tropical paradise feel! It was perfect for our little family of four!

Pono Kai

I went with this hotel because it said BlueGreen Resort and the one we stayed at in Vegas was lovely. I would also take into consideration that we had just left the Marriott in Poipu which I would consider one of the BEST places to stay in Kauia. We opted to spend a little extra to get the 2 bedroom suite. It started with the elevator being too small to carry the luggage cart and a person and the door opening backwards....I would say the accommodations were ok, had the weather been nice & we spent most of our day out enjoying Kauia or the many outdoor activities they offered (croquet, putting green, horseshoes) however it just happened to rain & there were flash flood warnings so we were "stuck" in our room. The ONLY nice thing was that we were allowed to smoke on our balcony (a luxury we were without at Marriott) The TV's were small and one room did not even have one. Only one hairdryer, it was in the master room. And the ad offered robes, which I did not see! It seemed like they were old apartments converted into a hotel. By the way, driving into the hotel was great & convenient, but driving out was a nightmare into "rush hour" traffic all afternoon!

Not Impressed

I was totally disappointed in the mix up over my reservation. We had to be cramped in a 1 bedroom condo when I had paid for a 2 bedroom condo. I certainly hope that I can get some sort of refund for my overpayment.

We had a great time and we'll go back. Just one staff member who was rude to us.

This is a place for families to go. There were lots of things to do on the grounds. Lots of green grass with bocce, tennis, basketball, volleyball, crochet, and putting greens. They had board games we could borrow and bbq's that people shared every night. Right on the water with a board walk that went about 5 miles out, I ran it almost every day. It was absolutely beautiful all coastal. We'll go back in a hearbeat!!!! The Safeway and Papaya's (a health food store) were 1/2 mile up the Kuhio hwy.

A real deal

We got there at night,the front desk guy was fast and ready to answer any questions.The map of the hotel,not so clear. Room was nice and clean. Only problem if you are staying on bottom floor and somebody from room above you uses the toilet at night,you hear the water coming down like a waterfall(master bathroom only).

Truly a magnificant Kauai experience - loved it and plan to go back to Pono Kai!

As I mentioned above - Pono Kai will be my return destination. The walk, jog, bike PATH right next to the beach is fabulous. Pono Kai is clean and a very friendly staff. Their amenities were such an asset to this trip, i.e., clean bar-b-ques for cooking that steak, absolutely lovely fish pond for kids to feed fish, chickens and roosters were a kick to see and hear, enjoyed the lady who does the crafts faire there twice a week, pool and hot tub were clean - never too crowded when we were there. Location is the best - Safeway and Longs Drugs and ABC Store right there within walking distance. There's a variety of restaurants and shops to see. I can't wait to go back there.

Great place to stay

No swimming beach. Very good location. Close to everything. Walk to local restaurants, check out a guide book at the local library its just a few blocks away. Very will kept grounds. Great pool and hot tub. I would stay here again. This place has everything you need and its just a short distance from the airport.

great trip with 'the kids'

we took our son and his wife (ages 31 and 26) on their first trip to hawaii (our fifth trip) - and no one was disappointed! we love just regular places - don't need all the bells and whistles - and pono kai was perfect. the room was comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, plenty of room on the lanai, quiet at night, great pool. we don't go to hawaii to stay in the room, but the room we had was just fine (bldg. g, 3rd floor). if weather was not so good, we just headed south - bad weather in hawaii is really not that bad! would stay at pono kai again.
