Mountain View's Story...
After years of city life, native-born Georgians David and Regina decided it was time for a change. The mountains in the northern part of the state appealed to them (Regina saw mountains every day of her life growing up), but when the realtor took him to a small property between two tiny towns in the Blue Ridge range, David was a bit hesitant.
“We always lived in the metro area, and originally didn’t want to look that far out,” David tells me. “But when I walked up to that ridge (where the RV is now) and took in the view, I immediately pulled out my phone to write Regina a message.”
That text to his wife said, “This is it.”
***
“We fell in love with that piece of land before we even walked the property,” David says of their three acres. And now, just a few years later, they’re full-time Dahlonegans.
“We live just a couple of miles from town, on a peaceful mountain road, and we love it here. Being from the city as we are, Dahlonega is a ‘Hallmark town,’” David smiles. “It’s homey, locally owned, and has its own quaint and quiet personality.”
***
In the RV there is a roll of paper that guests use to leave notes and comments about their stay. David still has every single one. He gets the pile of unbleached papers out of the closet and reads some to me, pride and joy in his voice. The view and sunset are a common theme. “Thank you for the beautiful mountain escape,” reads one. “Peaceful, beautiful, spectacular!” is another. “Serene getaway, sunset amazing!” And my favorite, the exclamatory and simple, “S’mores! Hiking! Hospitality!”
It’s that hospitality piece that drives David and Regina. They love welcoming people to their adopted home, and the RV atop the ridge. When I made the mistake of calling it a “trailer,” David corrected me.
“Calling this a ‘trailer,’” he says, “is like calling The Hilton a Motel 6,” he laughs. “It’s spacious, comfortable, and clean. I mean, we keep it almost too clean — obsessively clean! And the kitchen… We had a legit chef stay there once, and you should have seen some of the feasts he whipped up in that kitchen. ‘Trailer!’” He chuckles.
***
When there are no guests staying in the “Hilltop Hilton,” David and Regina head up to the ridge around sunset time with their dogs (yes, they’re dog people, and would love to host yours, too, providing they’re on the smaller side — see The Small Print for details), light a fire in the stone pit, and open a bottle of local wine.
“We sit there, rocking on those big swings, listening to the wind chimes on the breeze. Sometimes we see local critters — deer, turkeys, coyotes, rabbits, ermine, even a black bear every once in a blue… It’s downright spectacular. Once full dark comes, you look up and there’s stars galore, and you can see the Milky Way.”
Spectacular, indeed.
~Pro Tips & Local Wisdom~
● Warm up at Corner Kitchen in Dahlonega with a mug of their outstanding joe in your hands
● Antiquing (now no longer just for old people!) Dahlonega — which is super hip, by the way — has no fewer than three antiques stores. I’ll bet you need a lamp or a frame for your painting of dogs playing poker
● North Georgia is home to some noteworthy vineyards — and Mountain View is minutes away from several of them, such as Wolf Mountain, Cavender Creek, and Kaya Vineyard and Winery. Enjoy a glass or bottle and spectacular mountain panoramas
● Lace up your boots and bring some snacks: Dahlonega serves as a gateway to the Appalachian Trail, providing numerous hiking opportunities with varying difficulty levels
● Enjoy home-cooked southern comfort food at The Smith House
● Life is but a dream… when you’re enjoying a leisurely float down the Chestatee River (tube or kayak)
● Take in Dahlonega’s thriving arts scene: galleries and cultural events, including the Dahlonega Arts and Wine Festival, and local artisans and musicians
● There is so much more! Check out the printed guide we leave in the RV — or just ask us about our favorite activities, destinations, food/drink…
~The Small Print~
● Good neighbors and quiet hours. From 9 pm until 9 am. Otherwise, please no blaring music or loud shenanigans — let's keep our mountains peaceful
● Please conserve clean and waste water
● Super important: smoking/vaping is allowed only by the fire pit area
● You love your furry friends, and we’d love to host one or a couple of them (max. 25 lbs. each). We charge a $75 cleaning fee per dog, per day. Cats make us sneeze: please leave them with grandma (or an automatic feeder)
● Please keep your pups close or leashed — especially on properties that aren’t fenced in. If you plan to leave them alone, please make sure to bring a crate
● We put together a starter kit for your arrival (5 trash bags under the kitchen sink, 1 roll of paper towels per kitchen, 3 rolls of t.p. per bathroom, small bars of body soap) — please anticipate any needs beyond that, and stock up in town or bring from home
● Coffee can be a very personal choice: please bring your own beans or pods or whatnot
● You’ll find an ample supply of dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap
Suches Vacation Rentals operates in a beautiful but very remote area of the North Georgia Mountains. Because professional linen services are not available locally, we personally handle all laundering in-house. Each guest is provided with two freshly cleaned towels.
If you find you need extras, you’ll find a set of “seconds” under the bathroom counter. These are clean towels that have been dyed and repurposed to extend their life. While they may show mild wear or faint imperfections, they are freshly washed and perfectly suitable for use.
We appreciate your understanding and your help in supporting our efforts to conserve resources and reduce waste while maintaining comfort for every guest.
● Need us? We’re a phone call (and stone’s throw) away, 7 days a week, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Give us a buzz and we’ll be there in a jiff to help you with any unforeseen detail
Rest assured: No AI, you’re always talking to a real team member!
From our entire team, a big thank you for choosing SVR — and booking so much more than a rental property.
Born and bred here in Georgia, we ensure our clients feel the warmth of our southern hospitality and have unforgettable stays in beautiful homes — in one of the prettiest landscapes the country has to offer.
After nearly 10,000 stays and thousands of glowing reviews, we’re prouder than ever of what we do. And so are our property owners, like David and Regina, who come to us from bigger booking platforms looking for a personal touch and local hospitality.
We love North Georgia — and we love sharing her with you. In each of our cabins you’ll find an “Experience the Mountains” manual full of suggestions about local attractions such as hikes and sightseeing, as well as our favorite restaurants in town.
Want to connect with us about anything from the layout of the property to our favorite local merlot? Give us a shout. Someone on our team of locals (possibly me) will be happy to chat with you, answer any questions, and help you book your next dream mountain vacation.
We can’t wait to see you soon in our neck of the woods… and mountains, and lakes, and so much more.
