Should have been idyllic!

Situation : Nothing in the local area - one needs a car to get to the capital and sonrokelling and diving experiences to the west of the island
Located in area some 20 mins to the east of Willemstad and 45 minutes from the airport the hotel sits in acres of private grounds with a quirky beach area. The pool and restaurants are very nicely done and the staff on the whole are very friendly. Food is to a high standard and the golf course is something else with a very daunting/challenging/fun?! opening tee shot! The beach is sandy and ideal for children as it is very safe but it is somewhat sterile in terms of sea action as it is formed from the inlet by the introduction of a pontoon pier resulting in a swimming lane. Good to dip in and cool off but dull for waves and sea life. So why didn't we give it more than a general OK score of 3? Despite the general look and feel of the place it was the lack of staff response that grated. Housekeeping and or room service was extremely slow and if you wanted something then you would need to give them at least 24 hrs notice and have to make a few follow up calls. A shame as the staff were all very friendly. In the end it became very frustrating and as a result we ate out most nights, got a hire car and only really used the hotel for a bed and breakfast. As it was expensive to start with the unnecessary addition of 16% service charge was a bit of a cheek as the quality of service did not justify it. Whatever happened to leaving a tip based on quality of service...

Nice hotel but needs maintenance

at first glance it seems nice but the hotel needs some maintenance. there is a ton of dust on the doors to the toilet, sand on the floors, porch doors that barely close and are in desperate need of a varnish and the headboards of the beds are starting to peel. The buffet was OK but nothing special, the coffee was terrible and the beach is at the entrance to the marina so there are boats roaring by from 6 am onwards. not exactly a quiet beach.

Les - : Access to an English-language newspaper with international content would have been appreciated
Situation : The resort has on-site activities but is a long way from off-resort activities and shopping.
Our 1 am arrival was a few hours late due to circumstances but we had no trouble checking in. The food was very good and there was a lot of choice at the 4 dining locations.

Disgusted and Disappointed!

The white guests were prejudice, some of the hotel staff were violent and rude towards us and some of the staff did not notify the GM of the serious matter that we were dealing with at the moment. Expedia hung up on us 4 times and the hotel would not allow us to call Expedia from their phone so we accrued International charges and no resolution from Expedia or the hotel upon us trying to check-in. Expedia is deceiving to the extent that when you choose all-inclusive that your price for that is included yet the resort says that Expedia is known for doing that and that they do not offer that option through Expedia. Couldn't get a resolution, direct contact #, or a Supervisor from Expedia and still had to pay to eat the first night. It was not until the second day that we got the chance to speak with the GM to explain and just before that a pool worker was aggressive towards us and a pool guest that came to the pool area after we arrived told us and the hotel staff that we need to take our issues and conversations somewhere else because he was trying to rest. Can you say RUDE!!!! it was the public pool and not your room. Needless to say the GM rectified the situation for us as it concerns the all-inclusive and will resolve the Expedia issue as far as the resort's relationship with Expedia goes. I am not interested at this point in time to return there or even use Expedia again. We have booked 4-6 trips all-inclusive through Expedia and this is the first horrific experience!

Beautiful hotel, but has some oddities.

The hotel is way out away from everything - takes nearly 30 minutes to get to town - and there are no bars or restaurants anywhere near. The beach is nice, but it's clear that it was man-made. The room was too hot every day. The hotel doesn't allow you to turn the a/c below a pre-set temp, and it was uncomfortably warm when we tried to sleep. But overall it is a nice property, and the staff were excellent.
