Summary:
Filled to the brim with vintage finds and art, becoming acquainted with Greenswood House is akin to making a witty, lively and charismatic new friend. This sassy Victorian retreat blows the cobwebs from traditional Devon homestays with vigour and is the perfect base for a large family or group of friends. Sleeping 10 people in five bedrooms, this beautifully designed and spacious family home offers plenty of places to chill out. No stag or hen parties.
The Space:
Curl up on the sofa in front of the woodburner in cooler months or relax with something chilled in the hot tub in the pretty garden. Simply step outside Greenswood House and discover unique Brixham on your doorstep and the English Riviera beyond.
A kaleidoscope of rich colours and carefully curated finds form the basis of Greenswood House inspiring interior scheme. With an eclectic bohemian edge and no compromise on comfort or indulgence, this homestay is an uplifting space that embraces its period features. A deep, leather L-shaped sofa settled in front of a woodburner invites you to sink into relaxation during dark winter nights in the stylish living room. Head down the hall to the kitchen-dining area, where you can cook up a storm before feasting around the large dining table. Give the children their own eating area at the smaller kitchen table or use this space for a simple, candlelit supper.
Up the stairs to the upper floors, you’ll find a delightful array of five bedrooms. At the top of the house is a bright and inviting suite, boasting a king-size bed and an ensuite shower room. Three further bedrooms, two king and one double, painted in a rainbow of soft blues, greens and earthy tones, are sure to delight and aid restful sleep. Children will adore the house-frame bunk beds. The lower bedrooms share a spacious family bathroom.
Outside in the garden, you'll idle many an hour away on the comfy cane sofa and chairs before enjoying a lazy sunset supper of local cheese and fresh bread. If it’s a balmy night – or even if it’s not! – hop in the hot tub and let the warm water and bubbles tempt you to forget about the outside world.
Please note that we do ask guests on arrival to fill the hot tub with water and then switch on to heat afterwards. The entire process can take upto 8 hours before reaching temperature to bath in. We then provide the appropriate chemicals and testing strips for self management.
Guest Access:
Fresh Escapes will provide access details to the property exactly 48 hours before your check in time. Greenswood House is for your exclusive use.
The Neighborhood:
Nestled between Paignton and Dartmouth, Brixham is a working fishing port with a pretty, colourful harbour bowl that appears to have somehow been relocated from Italy’s Amalfi coast. Situated within walking distance from 15 Greenswood Road, it’s full of bars, pubs and fish’n’chip shops, of course – we love David’s on Bolton Street!
The small but vibrant coastal town offers easy access to the celebrated English Riviera, Dartmoor National Park and the stunning headland of Berry Head. Gorgeous coastal walks abound from Brixham to Kingswear – keep your eyes peeled for dreamy little coves that will tempt you to take a dip in their clear blue waters.
Breakwater Beach offers buckets-and-spade fun, a cafe and live music on weekends – there’s no better place to watch the sunset. Local eateries Rockfish, Albero and Beamers will wow with their sparklingly fresh seafood, while the Manor pub on Middle Street, the Queens Arms up Station Hill and the Prince William by the marina will charm with their old school cosiness. Further afield, try the River Shack in Stoke Gabriel for a waterside lunch and Andria in Dartmouth for incredible, upmarket European small plates. For coffee and cakes, head to our favourite cafe, The Larder, just a few minutes’ walk away.
Take a lovely walk around the harbour and you’ll find Fishcombe Cove, a seasonal alfresco cafe, and don’t miss The Guardhouse Cafe up on Berry Head – the coffee and cake is a great incentive for walking up there, although the view from the end is probably all the reward you really need!
For those who would rather browse than hike, explore Middle Street – which stretches from the harbour area, right down to the town's bus station – to discover hidden gems such as antique shops, interiors and lifestyle boutiques, great coffee and artisan bakeries. A swim in the wonderful iconic art deco sea water pool at Shoalstone is also a must!
Beach life can be found at the golden sands at Broadsands and Goodrington. St Mary’s Bay and Man Sands both take a bit of a walk to get to, but you’ll be rewarded with a wonderfully isolated beach and coastline.
Further afield, try Splashdown Quaywest at Paignton, Torquay, Shaldon Zoo, Haldon Forest, Powderham Castle, Paignton Zoo, the Dartmouth Steam Railway, Agatha Christie’s house Greenway and the lovely village Dittisham, and the rugged Dartmoor National Park with its tors and wild landscapes.
