Come October, the highway out front becomes part of the Ironman World Championship's 112-mile bike leg - athletes pass within a few miles of your lanai on their way north toward Hawi and back. The drive into Kailua-Kona for the swim start or the marathon finish runs about 35 minutes on a normal day, longer on race morning when Queen Kaahumanu Highway manages traffic for the cyclists.
