George Baldwin House Garden Apartment
The George Baldwin House was constructed in 1887. Designed by architect William Gibbons Preston. This was the first commission for Preston who later went on to design many of the most famous and impressive Savannah landmarks such as the Cotton Exchange. This home is largely original and rustic on the interior. The low price reflects that aspect of the unit interior but the incredible house and great location certainly are impressive. This is for those who want to experience something far different from a polished hotel room during their historic Savannah vacation. Brockington Hall is right next door. The apartment kitchen is stocked with basic utensils (plates, pots and pans, etc) as well as a refrigerator and stove and dishwasher. We do provide sheets and towels at this listing as well.
There are two separate bedrooms in this garden apartment unit, each with a Queen size bed. The bathroom is en suite with one of the bedrooms and the bedrooms have curtains as doors so this is great for parents with a teenager or 2 friends who want to sleep in separate beds but may not be suitable for 2 couples.
We do not have a sleeper sofa so this unit sleeps a max of 4 people.
The gardens and exterior of the home are other worldly, like stepping back in time. All outdoor space is shared with several other apartments in the mansion. Each apartment has its own private entrance. You have a very spacious screened in porch including an outdoor dining table and sofa that is private to this apartment. Parking is free and easy on the street at this location and the main downtown grocery store (Kroger) is less than a block away.
Nice. Eclectic. Old and cool. Lots of history in that house. The house itself predates electricity in houses in Savannah, which is just a bit of historical info. Loved the property. Nice garden area and lovely screened in patio. Perfect for our little family- myself, my husband and our 14 y/o daughter we came down for a wedding. We had a much better experience than my parents and grandparents who all stayed in hotels. If you want to get an old-world Savannah feel, I highly recommend it. The washcloths were a little funky. But other than that, zero complaints. I would definitely book here again.
Location was great. Historical house was beautiful on outside but very old and needed some updates inside such as bathroom sink, etc. very noisy upstairs from a toddler I believe, which was not comfortable. Very affordable, though compared to other VRBO.
Perfect location, walkable to parks, squares even river street (a bit of a walk, but doable). Very easy parking on the street. Comfortable beds, nice screened in porch, quiet neighborhood. Walk to grocery. Great stay.
Incredible historic house with all the expected downsides, but the ambiance and location made up for them. Strange layout, one bedroom has bathroom and dining table, the other has the only tv. Living room type area is a covered screened in porch where we spent the majority of our time. Walking distance to Kroger grocery and fun cafe a block away. Free on street parking never had to park more than a block away. Would highly recommend but remember this is an historic house with floors that arenât all level, and bathroom is only accessible through one of the bedrooms. Funky floor plan but quirky chic
we were here for three nights and had a wonderful stay. the location was only a short walk to Forsyth... we parked our car on Thursday and didn't use it again til we left for home!
I hate to give poor feedback, but feel I owe it to others who rely on reviews. While the picture of the home is stunning, the entry to the apartments are in back so you never see the front porch or the main house. The apartments are dark so have more of a basement feel. Very little if anything has been done to remodel the apartment we stayed in. Kind of a creepy feeling to stay there. The beds were comfortable and we only stayed one night so cannot say much about the shared porch area. The furnishings were mismatched and clearly cheap garage sale items. Iâve stayed in other old homes in Savannah. This one just isnât up to par. I cannot recommend.
We had a great time and enjoyed the stay at this VRBO. We loved the garden and it was great that we were so close to the grocery store. Very clean and very comfortable. Got to meet the owner of the home who told us more historical information. Enjoyed the weekend away!
This property was great for my sister and I. The location was ideal in the Historic District just 2 blocks from Forsyth Park and we were able to walk and take the free DOT bus everywhere we wanted to go. It is hard to tell from photos, but the apartment has not experienced recent renos. We were looking for a character experience so it was ideal for us.the screen porch was our go to for morning coffee and our evening glass of wine.
Just me and a friend stayed here, but it would be perfect for up to 4 people. The house the unit is in was gorgeous, and the screened in porch was perfect for relaxing. Parking was easy and grocery right next door. Would stay here again!
Cute 2 bedroom 1 bathroom historic place. Very clean! Looked nice and was accurate to the listing online. Street parking always available. Had a great time!
We were amazed at the history that was maintained. It did have an old smell but that was expected with the age of the building. We enjoyed the outdoor area. We enjoyed our short stay.
This first floor apartment has plenty of Savannah style and charm. We were comfortable and happy to park our car and walk everywhere. The large sleeping porch and fenced yard gave us extra room to spread out.
The washing machine made a terrible noise and water leaked onto the floor. We reached out to the owner with no response. There was only one roll of toilet paper, with no extras. The place is run down and in need of many touch-ups. There were limited kitchen supplies. We would definitely not stay here again.
Amazing historic Savannah experience! Just out the door, we started a day-long walking tour, stopping at the grocery store across the street for dinner supplies on our way back in. Easy in and out and parking to do day trips as well. The rental itself feels like part of the historic experience, and was comfortable, clean, and as described. We had a lovely lunch in the screened-in patio and the kids enjoyed the garden space as well. Amazing stay - thank you!
We had a blast. The property was perfect for my husband and I along with my daughter and her friend to stay for a quick weekend trip. Had an amazing location. Very historic and gorgeous property. Parking was free. We enjoyed it very much.
The place was just as described. It was in a fantastic location, walking distance to everything. The check-in process was a breeze. The place was very clean. Would highly recommend this beautiful mansion.
Visiting Savannah for a wedding. Family staying nearby so the location was great. Convenient to shopping and Forsythe park. Pleasant walk to the river and many restaurants nearby. The apartment was perfect for two adults with access to the garden and yard.
