A fabulous place to stay to explore Whitby, explore the area and coastal walks. Facilities clean and tidy, great on-site cafe and the local town is walkable, albeit uphill on the return. And superb views of Whitby Abbey on the YHA doorstep.

A great value for money stay. My private ensuite room basic but functional as simply needing somewhere to sleep. Hand soap provided in room but no towels. The property does have self catering kitchens, a tv room, lounge (with board games) and conservatory. The adjoining cafe (which is open to the public) serves full breakfasts from 7.30am and closes as 8.30pm. Despite signage requesting quiet between 11pm and 7am, I was subjected to raised voices from a nearby room well beyond 2am. Nobody present at checkout so a simple key drop box was provided.

Thanks for the 5/5 review. Sorry you were disturbed by other anti-social guests. We do have a Team Member on duty overnight so guests can always come to them for help in situations like this.

Hi Paul, thanks for the review. The building has an ancient plumbing system and whilst we do our very best, occasionally an odd smell appears. We do advise running the shower if this happens to fill the drain trap and eliminate the smell. Sorry you had it on your visit. Staff can always help further if notified during a stay.

Transgender day of remembrance trip
As a non binary person and woman I was treated with dignity and respect by the staff of the YHA and allowed to wait in tge television lounge Only negative was a lot of old people in the hostel as guests with their outdated attitudes towards LGBTQI+ people

I will use again with no second thoughts
I did arrive in the dark and sat nav took me to the entrance but, small signage I missed so walked short distance to hostel to find you can drive through archway to car park and entrance. but I will know next time, I also booked breakfast (at a fair price) which I did enjoy, all staff I found was pleasant and helpful, so thank,s everyone how made my stay stress free,

Top location for staying in Whitby
There is no doubt that this is the best place to stay in Whitby, simply for its location. In addition to that it is a very well-run youth hostel. My only criticism is that there was sometimes no one in reception, which made it difficult to get information, until you became one of the people in the know, to know that you should go to the tea-room (also called the cafe) where you will find someone to help.

Hi MargaretSometimes we do get pulled away from the Reception Desk to help out in other parts of the business but as you say staff are always available in the cafe. We leave a sign on the reception desk to that effect normally.We look forward to seeing you again soon

Wonderful location and set in beautiful grounds from which there are amazing views overlooking Whitby one side and views of the Abbey on the other side. Lovely lounge and conservatory too.

Great Stay
Great location. Nice, clean and well maintained. Free parking and voucher to the musuem. Extensive kitchen facilities. Highly recommended.

This property is so beautiful and unique. The views are stunning and the shared areas are wellkept and attractive. It is my favourite place to stay in Whitby and I look forward to returning soon.

Wish they would get rid of the seagulls
I’ve stayed at Whitby Youth hostel 4 times before and my only criticism is the 199 steps to climb from the old town. Most seagulls are dangerous vermin and I was in room M8 which had an active seagull nest outside which it being nesting season was active with noise the 48 hours I was there. The hostel gave me a bunk which was a lower one on the third floor which was a struggle as I’m arthritic . The property is a 17 th century former Manor House that has a tv lounge, self catering kitchen and lovely cafe .

Grand building, enjoyable stay.
It's a very good Youth Hostel in a lovely situation. I was upgraded and had the choice of 6 double bunks! The bunks were comfortable, bedding clean etc. Breakfast was in the cafe attached to the site and was really great. Cafe also had lovely views across the town. I have stayed in Whitby before and at least one of the places was not at all satisfactory. I will be going back to Whitby to visit friends and I will rebook at the YHA. found it good value for money and the free pass to go onto the English Heritage site was an added bonus.

A short stay on the Cleveland way
Ideally situated for my stay ,while hiking the Cleveland Way, right on the doorstep, The room way clean & spacious with a comfortable bed & excellent shower facilities, couldn't have asked for more, thank you 10 out of 10, will use again if in the area again ,highly recommended

Drain smell problem
Customer service excellent at reception and kitchen. Our big problem was the horrible smells coming from the sink drain, in our room, room 9. We tried to cover the sink and drain holes, but the smell was just horrible.

Pleasantly surprised
First time in YHA & pleasantly surprised! For the money, it was good value. Spacious room with private toilet & shower (separate). Obviously quite basic but clean & comfortable which is the main thing to get right. Great setting in an historic building right next to the Abbey (for which free entry ticket also supplied) - and the nearby Whitby Brewery tsp room also worth a visit. Free car parking right outside & friendly, helpful staff. It’s ideal for a short break

lovely
lovely stay. clean comfortable quiet and just 5 mins walk out of whitby. free parking and even free tickets to get into whitby abbey. i couldnt fault our stay

With it being a hostel we weren’t expecting 5 * service but we definitely didn’t expect having blood splashed all over the windows, carpet and bed frames. The receptionist had told us someone a week before had smashed the window in and was taped up so he did give us some money off for that but he didn’t include the room would be covered in someone’s else blood. Very disappointing and wanted to complain but there wasn’t anyone at the reception when we were checking out.

Beautiful building and a perfect location!
A true hidden gem of a building, make sure to check out the beautiful conservatory and gardens. The rooms are very basic as expected for the price, but still clean and with an en suite. Free parking on site was a plus! A perfect place to stay while exploring Whitby if you don’t mind not having a fancy hotel room!
