6/10 Satisfaisant

The hotel is in a striking location on the cliffs overlooking the shore, surrounded by the sound of crashing waves. It’s a fairly long walk to the town proper, but I loved the location.
That’s really the only good thing I can say about the hotel. It was tired and showing its age. My room was clean but had patches of peeling paint on the walls. It smelled of a combination of seaside dampness and “30 years ago people were allowed to smoke in here”. On the first night the wind was so strong it rattled the windows and the extraction fan in the bathroom so loudly I struggled to sleep. Until I realised the window had been left slightly on vent and closed it fully, even leaving aside the rattling, the wind combined with the waves meant in the early hours of the morning it sounded a bit like a jet engine was running outside the building (until I figured that out, I was considering cutting my losses and trying to book a different hotel at 2am). One day I accidentally knocked a secondary latch on the room door when leaving, locking me out when I got home that evening, and the very helpful guy on the front desk - in a very practiced way, this clearly being a regular occurrence - came up with a screwdriver and jimmied around through a hole in the door until it unlocked.
It was very inexpensive, and the staff were great, and really helpful whenever I needed them. But it wasn’t a great experience and I wouldn’t recommend it or go back.
