All the charm of a rustic site with the benefit of a hot shower and kitchen amenities. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the river, reading in the hammock, and morning coffee in the screened in porch. We read the reviews ahead of time and were aware of what to expect. Had a deer or moose (too dark to discern which) visit the island very early one morning and enjoyed watching the beaver in the evening. Fantastic location for a day trip to Copper Harbor or the
Porcupine Mountains
This was an excellent opportunity for my son and I to complexly get away from the city and be surrounded by nature. Getting to the island was fairly easy with the pontoon boat.
My primary negatives were that there was effectively no charcoal for the grill and only enough firewood for one night. Normally this wouldnât be a big deal but we stayed two nights and this is a very isolated property. It should have been better stocked and the welcome email indicated that there would be plenty of firewood.
I feel I should warn people that there are a LOT of flies and mosquitoes during the day so bring plenty of bug spray.
Overall, we really enjoyed the stay and thankfully we didnât plan on using the grill exclusively and we did have one nice evening with a fire but I wish we could have had two.
We will definitely keep this place in mind for a future stay.
There was garbage...roofing other debris that has been left for a while around property, and the last occupants beer cans. dust and stuff around the beds and mouse poop. Woke up by the critters in the rafters, they make traps for critters that are safe to use around pets. broken paddles and stuff on the pontoon. The heat was not working properly used one of the electric heaters to heat living room. Had to do a hard clean on the egg grill as it was in bad shape with water in the bottom. (You're welcome) could be an awesome place with someone paying more attention to details. tried to use the electric grill was rusted and smelled like mouse poop when we tried to heat it up. other than that, we had some fun and caught some fish.
Cool property, unique experience. Definitely need to work on the rodent problem! A mouse ran across the bathroom floor when I was brushing my teeth, and my husband and I had trouble sleeping due to scratching noises in the ceiling of our bedroom.
Beautiful charming property. Wonderful communication with property management. Very clear instructions and directions which was much appreciated. Remote but a small town 10ish mins away if you need an essential. Docked pontoon waiting for you to captain yourself across the river to the island with the cabin on a hill. We loved the historic pictures on the fire place and learning about the property which is over 100 years old!!! We love history with our stays!!! The place was exactly as described!!! Beds were super comfortable with great bedding. Kitchen was great to cook in while the family played cards in the screened porch area. 110% will be coming back
The cabin exceeded our expectations. The description of the bedrooms was accurate, but made the cabin seem much smaller than it felt. The livingroom had seating for 6, there were 6 stools at the kitchen dinette counter, and the screened in porch held 4 more comfortable chairs. (Plus the outdoor seating around the fire, the hammock, etc) It would be close quarters for non-family members perhaps, but we hope to come back with our family and share in the unique privacy this island provides.
The full kitchen meant there was plenty of room for foodstuff. That also meant we could cook indoors, or outdoors on the grill or over the fire (which has a really nice cooking grill that swings over the firepit easily).
The water tasted good, and wasn't the "gross well water" you sometimes find at remote cabins. Also, the cabin had air conditioning, heaters in the bedrooms, a 40" flatscreen smart TV (with Netflix), and satellite-based WiFi service that worked reliably during our visit.
The river itself is wide and easy to navigate with the small trolling motor on the pontoon boat. If you look at the guest books, there are a few maps pointing out good fishing spots. We didn't notice those until after we'd been out on the boat, but next time we'll try fishing over by the bridge!
Tips:
* Bring a few large "totes" to load things in. Lots of trips with individual bags is no fun.
* The living room is very dark, especially on a cloudy day. Be prepared for that.
* Bring an extension cord or 2
From the moment we pulled up to the dock and looked up the hill at the beautiful, rustic cabin I knew we were going to have an amazing time! Eagles soaring from the immense pine tree, geese and sandhill cranes calling and the occasional fish flop in the water are about all the neighbors you've got out here on the secluded island. There's a beautiful view from all around the island. Inside the cabin was so charming and I loved the real wood everywhere, the rooms are great, windows all over, the screened in porch was a great place to relax. They had firewood on the island which was convenient, the firepit was great for ambiance and smores! The kitchen has anything you'd need to cook and they have a roku tv but we didn't even need it. We had a blast kayaking down the river and watching the sunset over the water was breathtaking. I would recommend this vacation property to anyone! It never disappointed and was always fun, for me, my two boys and our dog!
It was so serene having our own little island for a week. The kids spent hours fishing off the dock & boats, feeding our trail mix to the chipmunk friends they made & roasting marshmallows around the fire. Mom even got a nap in the hammock over looking the river. Dad got to show the kids how to filet the fish we caught for our dinner. Great memories!
Staying on the island was unique and fun. The pontoon was a great way to get across the river without having to row! The chipmunks were cute and interesting to watch; one even snuck in when I opened the sliding glass door. One snake was spotted near the fire pit but quickly retreated to the woods. We also saw many geese and ducks. We enjoyed ourselves and understood that this place wasnât for everyone but did give a lower rating for cleanliness and check in. The bathroom had a left over bar of dirty soap in the shower and when we arrived at 4:45pm no boats were at the dock⊠all were on the island with a gentleman who we believed worked for the rental management company. We had to wait about 10 mins before he noticed us standing on the dock. Floating on the river via the pontoon was the hi-light of the stay and the whole experience will be one we can look back on for many years to come.
What a perfect space to stay in while we were there for a wedding. It was very clean, safe, and plenty of places to explore nearby. The hosts were courteous and helpful to make sure our stay was pleasant. We wish we had more time to go to the Farmerâs Market close by while we were there and plan to visit again to do just that. Thanks Kevie and Rebecca!
It was great except for the cleanliness. Fridge and microwave were dirty as were the floors which looked like they were not swept since the last guests. Shower wouldn't drain and when I lifted wooden platform I I couldn't see the holes in the drain as they were covered in a bunch of hair. No firewood on island or land. They brought some the next day but it was green poplar and wouldn't burn.
Cute little cabin with picturesque views of the river. Great experience. Like camping but with less set up and modern conveniences. I think the dog had the most fun though.
We loved the cabin and the island so much! The cabin has great energy and so much history! We loved everything about it! And the island is so beautiful and peaceful! We watched the sunsets and listened to the whippoorwills, saw many beautiful birds, and were visited by Chipper the Chipmunk. Thank you so much for a wonderful vacation!
We rented the Republic Island Cabin and loved it! It was two adults and two dogs. Everything was as described, and amenities are perfect! The pontoon was available, and there were life jackets on it, but we had brought our own just in case. I was nervous for the ride over, but it was short. I am not sure I would have wanted to use the John boat to take two dogs, so I was grateful for the pontoon use. The entire property is so peaceful. I highly recommend staying here!
We absolutely loved staying here
We didn't have video games for the kids so the kids had to make their own entertainment
As a family we played games had actual conversations not through phones
Just what was needed
When they say rustic they mean it. We had chipmunks leave us pinecones INSIDE at the cabin. Cabin/boat needs works (in my opinion) but my husband enjoyed it thoroughly. We both decided itâs not for us but if you like rustic, there ya go!
Needs some TLC. Kitchen sink drain was leaking and couldn't plug in heaters without blowing a breaker. Order a facecord of wood to be delivered, which wasn't there. Ted, your wood man did show that day but only brought maybe a half face cord for the $100 that was paid. need to replace him for sure..We sell wood in the winter right here so we know whats what. Overall, we still made the best of it. maybe next time we can make a deal on some cheap labor for a weeks stay. paint or screen repair, Alvin has a few holes started. lol general pick-up around the Island. we want to thank you for yet another adventure that put smiles on our faces and love in our hearts. God Bless!
Our visit to Republic Island was everything we hoped for. Yes, it was rustic (we were prepared for that) and we had a great stay. Weather was quite cold during our visit but cabin was comfortable and we were even able to use the 3 season porch for a game of cribbage. Cara and Mark were available for questions/concerns. We had a great time and are looking forward to a visit (hopefully) next July. If you love the outdoors and are flexible THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE.
