Route 66 - Springfield, IL: Served as state house from 1840-1876. Thereafter it served as county courthouse from 1876-1966, which is what travelers on Route 66 would recognize it as. It was the site of candidacy announcements for Abraham Lincoln (1858) and Barack Obama (2007).
Mr Lincoln’s house. He would live here from 1844 until leaving for Washington DC in 1861. The house was purchased for 1,500 dollars from the local minister and the second story was added in 1853. According to the NPS this view is the most photographed according to historical archives!
Created in 1862 this National Cemetery is one of the 14 original ones. It is located on what was a Civil War training facility that was started in 1861. In 1862 two thousand Confederate soldiers were brought here after they surrendered in Donelson, Tennessee. It is still an active cemetery containing soldiers from every conflict since the Civil War.
The train depot that the Lincoln family left from after he was elected President. It is the same depot his remains returned to after his assassination.
Front entry to the fabulous Dana-Thomas house. Built by Frank Lloyd Wright between 1902-04 for a local widow. The house has the largest number of FLW built furniture and art glass of any of his remaining properties. Tours are offered and we would highly recommend them as this house is special! (Also, no photos inside so you have to your to see it!)
