St. Barbora's Church, KutnĂĄ Hora, Czech republic

The Roman Catholic Cathedral dedicated to Saint Barbora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.

It was built in KutnĂĄ Hora town in Central Bohemia during the days when it was the most important silver mining place in Czech kingdom. The building began in 1388 and it was finished in 1558 when the mining ceased to be profitable.

Actually it was not initiated by any church institution but it was a representative chappel building sponsored by wealthy towns men and dedicated to patron saint of miners, the saint Barbara.

In 17th century it has received Baroque elements and from 1884 to 1905 its current Neogothic puristic appearance including the western facade and three tent-like roofs.

Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, KutnĂĄ Hora, Sedlec, Czech republic

Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist is a Gothic and Baroque Gothic church in KutnĂĄ Hora, Sedlec, very important and one of the oldest examples of the Baroque Gothic style connected with the Czech Baroque architect Jan BlaĆŸej Santini-Aichel.

The church was built first in the Gothic style around 1300 as one of the first High Gothic building in the Kingdom of Bohemia and as the first church in the kingdom resembling French Gothic cathedrals. It was built as a part of the Cistercians Sedlec Abbey, which was the oldest Cistercian abbey in the Czech lands founded in 1142. It was unique as although a Cathedral in style, the Abbey was not having a Bishop. Also it was built in very puristic way, true to Cistercian architecture basics, with no towers, minimum of sculptures, pure glass windows and no supporting external structures.

The abbey was burnt down by the Hussites in 1421 and the church became a ruin for the next three centuries.

In 1700 the abbot of the Sedlec Abbey decided to rebuild the old church. The reconstruction was conducted by the architect Pavel IgnĂĄc Bayer. After three years the new architect became Jan BlaĆŸej Santini-Aichel. He completed the reconstruction of the church in his original style called Baroque Gothic. He actually respected the simplicity and purity of the original and sensitivelly pointed out the height and width of the interior. His most impressive works in the church are the amazing vaults and front wall (as seen in the picture) of the church with its antechamber. The church was consecrated in 1708.
