Room was perfect. View from the room looking over the harbour. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing and the portions were large. No skimping on anything. Breakfast was really good and no pressure to rush. Will definitely recommend and return to this hotel if we can come back to Orkney. A big thank you to all the staff that looked after us.

The Ayre Hotel has a great location to central Kirkwall. Easy drive to the various points of interest on Orkney. Beautiful view, exceptional restaurant, congenial bar.

Property is going through some renovation. They have a little bit more to complete. It's looking good and it did not effect our stay in the least bit. The hotel is close to fuel, groceries and a distillery. My recommendation is to stay in their apartments.

It was wonderful to have the additional space an apartment provided. The easy parking allowed a stress free return home after a stressful day of driving on the left hand side of the road! The location is perfect.

The Ayre hotel was fine and functional. The room was clean with basic amenities and a somewhat hard bed. The shower was nice and strong. The staff were busy but helpful when needed.

Great hotel, centrally located with good food
We enjoyed this hotel very much - very efficient and pleasant staff, nice large room and very clean. It's opposite the harbour and our room overlooked this so we had a great view. We also dined there twice - the food was very good and highly recommended. Bar a little noisy and brash for us but a nice range of whiskies and local real ale on draught. Overall a great place to stay in Kirkwall and would happily stay there again.

Tim and Maureen at the Ayre Hotel, Kirkwall.
A very good room overlooking Kirkwall Bay with a large, comfortable double bed. With the hot weather during our stay the room was uncomfortably stuffy during the day. This was not helped by the only opening windows being restricted toplights. The only meal we had was dinner on our final night, which was excellent. Service all round was faultless and very friendly. The room and all public areas of the hotel wer very clean but, sadly, there was no bath mat (readily supplied)or worse, no toilet brush in the room. Would be very happy to stay again.

This is as central a location to Kirkwall as it gets. I booked this hotel as my accommodation for a three day Orkney tour, and it provided exactly what I needed. The room was clean, the bed was very comfortable, it was quiet, and the wi-fi was good.

Normal bland hotel room seen the world over, clean, plenty of free parking, good location, good breakfast, restaurant good burger fish and chips steak pie options etc. Building work prevented access to lounge bar. Staff were polite and helpful but not very cheerful or happy maybe that is the Orcadian way.

Very nice accommodations in the building behind the hotel. We had a suite that was very comfortable. The actual hotel is still under renovation, so looks are deceiving. The scaffolding and interior work by the main desk make the entrance look a bit “iffy”, but the restaurant and bar are fine. The staff was very helpful, friendly and accommodating.

The staff was amazing. They were very polite and friendly and quite helpful. They went out of their way 3 times to make sure we received a table for dinner even though we did not have a reservation. The hotel was under renovation/construction while we were there. Again, staff and workers were very polite and accommodating.

The hotel is currently undergoing renovations but it did not bother us at all during our stay. Let’s start with the positives: - Conveniently located in Kirkwall and walking distance to most shops and restaurants including an Aldi and Tesco. - The food at the restaurant for dinner was delicious and the service was good considering how busy they are and the staffing levels (the self-serve breakfast was just ok) - Ample parking in front of the hotel and in the immediate surrounding areas - Friendly staff with excellent suggestions for things to see beyond the tourist “standards” Now for the not so good: - If you are reasonably tall (6’0” or taller) the double beds will not fit you and the bedding also reflects that. The room wouldn’t have fit a larger bed but it still makes sleeping a challenge. - There are several bars nearby so expect to be woken up after closing time by loud groups of people coming back to their rooms, yelling in the hallways and slamming their doors repeatedly - The price was rather steep but I understand this is about supply and demand If I return to the Orkney mainland I will probably look to stay elsewhere, likely outside of Kirkwall, as I simply could not get a good nights sleep.

Very comfortable bed, and staff were friendly and efficient. Since the room was in an adjacent building to main, I was able to come and go as I needed without having to disturb reception.
