Welcome to the Plant House, a one-of-a-kind group stay in Houston’s East End. Featured in the August 2019 issue of Houstonia, the Plant House combines two thoughtfully restored, artist-designed 1890s Victorian homes on one beautiful, tree-shaded property.

Your reservation includes both homes—all seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, two kitchens, indoor living spaces, and the deck and garden areas between them. The houses sit just steps apart, allowing everyone to stay together while still having plenty of room and privacy. Accommodating up to 14 overnight guests, the Plant House is ideal for families, friends, extended stays, celebrations, retreats, and group trips.

Inside, both homes blend historic character with modern comfort. You’ll find soaring ceilings, original artwork, distinctive furnishings, comfortable bedrooms, welcoming gathering areas, and plenty of places to work, read, or relax. One home has a spacious open kitchen, living room, and dining area, while the other offers an inviting eat-in kitchen and living space. With two kitchens, your group will have plenty of room to cook, share meals, and spend time together.

The large central deck is the heart of the Plant House and a natural gathering place. Beneath the shade of mature oak trees, guests can enjoy a spacious lawn, hammock garden, picnic tables, gas grill, and pizza oven. Whether you’re having coffee outside, preparing a group dinner, or relaxing under the trees, the property offers an unusual amount of outdoor space for a city stay.

The Plant House is located in Houston’s vibrant East End, a lively neighborhood known for its food, nightlife, art, and local personality. Eight Row Flint is just steps away, while Moon Tower Beer Garden, Voodoo Queen, How to Survive, Equal Parts Brewing, cafés, vintage shops, and other neighborhood favorites are within walking distance.

The Coffee Plant METRORail station is only two blocks away, and downtown Houston is approximately seven minutes away by train. The location also provides convenient access to many of Houston’s major attractions and event venues.

This is an energetic urban neighborhood rather than a quiet suburban setting. Parties occasionally take place on nearby blocks, and distant train noise may sometimes be heard. Guests who enjoy lively city neighborhoods and an authentic local atmosphere tend to love staying here.

With advance approval, the Plant House may also accommodate intimate celebrations and special gatherings, including wedding weekends, rehearsal dinners, bridal or baby showers, graduation celebrations, milestone birthdays, family reunions, and retreats. Events may include up to 15 additional visitors, with a maximum of 30 people on the property at one time, and are considered on a case-by-case basis. Approved events that include outdoor use require an additional refundable $500 security deposit. Outdoor quiet hours begin at 10 p.m., and guests must keep noise at a reasonable level and leave all indoor and outdoor areas as they found them. Event pricing is on a case-by-case basis.

The Plant House was created by longtime friends Jeff Kaplan, co-creator of Houston’s Axelrad Beer Garden, and Robin Goldstein, co-creator of the Fearless Critic Houston Restaurant Guide. Their vision was to create a guest house with soul—comfortable, creative, welcoming, and rooted in its surroundings.

The project began when neighbors worked to save several 1890s Houston bungalows that were slated for demolition in nearby parts of the Coffee Plant neighborhood. Legendary Houston house mover John Cherry relocated six homes to this block, preserving both the historic buildings and the neighborhood character they represented.

The result is a distinctive residential enclave that feels closer to 1890s Houston than a typical modern development, with welcoming porches, low fences, shared green spaces, and a close-knit community atmosphere. The Plant House consists of two of these six relocated homes—and both are included in this listing. Original murals, paintings, and installations by Houston artist Melissa Eason appear throughout the homes. Architect Ben Rosenblum contributed to the project, and Brazilian furniture designer Cristina Murusiak selected many of its one-of-a-kind furnishings.
