This is the lovely entrance to the Rose Garden. The Butchart gardens are situated north of Victoria on Vancouver Island. The original Butchart family manufactured Portland cement from the rich limestone deposits here. But as the quarry became depleted Jennie Butchart set about building the gardens that extend to 55 acres and are now a National Historic Site of Canada. Don't forget to pick up a free guide to the most common plants used in the gardens. Really interesting and helpful.
