Description

Learn all about the Canadians' contributions to World War I during a fascinating guided tour of some of the conflict's most significant battlefields. Enjoy your journey in the company of a friendly guide who boasts 20 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge to share.

You are able to choose from the following 2 itineraries:

Vimy, Ypres & Flanders:
After convenient pick-up from either your hotel or the Kortrijk railway station, depending on where you're staying, make your way by comfortable minibus to the Canadian National Memorial in Vimy. This immense, 2-column structure stands in dedication to the memories of Canadian Expeditionary Force members who lost their lives or went missing during World War I. Visit the Grange Tunnels at Vimy Ridge, where Canadian troops stood for hours before engaging in battle. Enjoy some free time to explore the visitor centre and see its exhibitions and a short film.

Stop for lunch along the way to Flanders, where you begin your visit by standing on Hill 62, also known as Mount Sorrel. These heights were initially taken by German forces before being recaptured by the Canadians. You also enjoy the opportunity to see Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Europe. See Crest Farm, the last strong point before the capture of Passchendaele as well as the Brooding Soldier at Saint Juliaan, where some of the first gas attacks took place. Visit the Menin Gate Memorial and attend the daily Last Post before hassle-free transport back to your hotel.

Passendale & Ypres:
Travel via comfortable minibus towards Passchendaele, where you have the opportunity to visit the Tyne Cot Military Cemetery and Crest Farm Memorial. Explore the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, devoted to the battle of the same name and year, and learn about the material aspects of World War I. Make your way to Hooghe Crater on the Menin Road and get a look at preserved trenches where Canadian forces sought shelter during combat. Stand on Hill 62, also called Mount Sorrel, and see the Brooding Soldier at Saint Juliaan, where Germans launched the first gas attacks in April of 1915. Get a brief look at the German cemetery of Langemark before going to Essex Farm, a bunker once used as a dressing station during the war.

Your final stop is Ypres, with visits to the Cloth Hall and St. Martin's Cathedral. Take some free time before attending the Last Post at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing before your experience comes to an end, with hassle-free transport back to Bruges, Lille, or Brussels.

We went to Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Flanders Field and Hill 62 plus many other significant and important sights. Claude Verhaeghe of Battlefield Tours www.battlefieldguide.uk was amazing. His knowledge of all the sights was so engaging we felt as though we were back in 1916 - 1918. His patients was appropriated especially when I may have found possible relatives in at the grave sites. He helped find the headstones so that I could photograph them. We opted for the private tour and the cost was well worth it. This experience has grabbed me and my heart in a way I never thought possible. Thank You again Claude for your knowledge, compassion and patience. 😊
