Description

Experience the best travel stories for yourself! Join a local expert and uncover hidden gems on this Lonely Planet Experience powered by Urban Adventures.Treat your taste buds to authentic Cretan dishes during a food and wine tour of Heraklion. Cretan cuisine is among the healthiest and tastiest in the world, and this experience provides plenty of opportunity to taste its many diverse flavours—with lots of history and culture sprinkled in.

After meeting your guide at Eleftherias Square, begin a scenic walk through a variety of districts new and old, with plenty of commentary that sheds light on the city's storied past. Grab a cup of coffee—a serious ritual in Greece—and learn about how the drink is traditionally brewed on sand. At your next stop, savour a famous bougatsa, which is a pastry consisting of custard, cheese, or minced meat filling between layers of filo.

Leaving the historic centre, make a visit to a local market and chat with vendors, while enjoying samples of olives, rusks, and cheese, with the opportunity to learn how to select the best, freshest cheese. Of course, no tour of Crete would be complete without tasting some of the region's finest olive oil, which is widely available.

After all the tastings, it's time to sit down for a fresh meal of local delicacies that may include fried snails, if you're feeling brave enough. Wrap up your tour by trying a few wines from a family-run shop and learn a little about wine's extensive history in Crete.
