Wolf Dome at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, Sleeps two, One Night Minimum

Wolf Dome is a two person glamping dome at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, a few miles from the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. The Wolf Dome features Wireless Internet, flat screen TV, a picnic table and propane barbecue, year-round heat and AC, a small fridge, microwave, a hot and cold water dispenser, The bed features a new box spring and Serta mattress. Dogs are welcome as longas they are always under your control. There are two bathrooms, one with a shower and washer-dryer, both shared with renters of the four person Bear Cabin, at the Wendy Hall Welcome Center, about 80 feet away from the Dome.

The Welcome Center features a ping pong table, as well as a combination chess-checkers-backgammon table. The Welcome Center is a great place to learn about nature, and you may purchase sweat shirts, tee shirts, books, photographs etc. There is an active Bald Eagles nest directly across the river from where the canoes and kayaks are racked, and the nest has produced a surviving eaglet each of the last three years, so bring cameras and binoculars. Nesting season begins in late January to early February, with eaglets hatching around April 1st.

While the Wildlife Refuge has public hikers during open hours between 10 am and 4 pm, the Refuge is all yours after 4 pm closing. Sit around the campfire or walk down to the West Branch of the Ausable River, and use our hot tub, outside wood sauna, and then the strong in spirit can go jump in the lake! Fish, swim and use our canoes and kayaks along the Ausable, which in this area is also called Lake Everest. Lucky hikers and kayakers have spotted moose, bear, coywolf, fox, fisher and eagles, as well as songbirds and any bird of prey you'll find in the Adirondacks, from owls to hawks to falcons and osprey, in the sloughs, or along the two miles of family friendly hiking trails in the 50 acre Adirondack Wildlife Refuge.

Want to learn all about owls and falcons, and all the members of the food chain, from the micro world of insects, through birds and small mammals, along with the reptiles and amphibians which make up that food chain, and their roles in nature?

Find or call Steve Hall, the owner of the Refuge, who lives in Ausable Lodge, down by the river. Steve has extensive experience with wolves, bears, raptors and moose, and will teach you all about the challenges they face as key members of the food chain. How about outer space, learning about our place in the universe, how old it is and how long we’ve been on earth, livestock and how we developed livestock out of wild animals, and the ongoing insect apocalypse and other fascinating and sometimes scary topics? Glamping with a heavy dose of Nature, and all for a good cause, as all rents are used to fund expenses at the Adirondack Wildlife refuge.

The site was described as being in Tupper Lake but it's actually in Wilmington which is an hour from Tupper Lake. The cabin itself is fine though a little cobwebby but the property around is unattractive.

A wonderful, unique and super fun stay at Wolf Dome. Everything was as described. The river access was gorgeous and being able to paddle was awesome. The hot-tub was truly amazing and I have never had such cozy robes as what was provided for us. Will come again!

Overall, this was a great trip. Steve, the owner lives on the property and was extremely knowledgeable about everything in the area. The wolf dome is exactly as pictured. Please keep in mind that while it is "glamping", it is still basically camping. If you are freaked out by a spider web or other minor things in nature, this isn't the vacation for you. The property by the main house, and in the woods near the wolf dome, are gorgeous! There are lots of kayaks that you can use for free. If you paddle to the right (facing the river) you will arrive at the town park where we saw a really good concert and barbecued with the locals. The only downside of this property (for some, we found it quite interesting), is that up until recently it was a wild life preserve and now it is in varying states of decay. There are a lot of broken down old pens and other debree around the property which takes away from its beauty. But again, it's interesting to walk around and imagine what a busy place it was at one time. I would stay here again.

This was horrible- do not stay here ever this was absolutely disgusting...If you want to sleep in mouse poop and feeces than this is your spot... The owner said the place was clean...but look at the photos-does that look clean to you? We had to sleep in our car because it was so disgusting, and we would have been putting our health at risk by sleeping in and around mouse poop- which can expose humans to many dieases....this place is NOT WORTH IT AT ALL- go to one of the hotels in Lake Placid- this place should be taken down off of VRBO
Hair everywhere
Coffee pot and food area covered by mice poop
Mouse shit next to the desk
Mouse shit everywhere

We came up here to celebrate our 25th. If you are a backpacker, then pooping over water luxury will describe this property for you. If you are coming here expecting luxury, this is not it. It is a glamping situation and is exactly what you would expect for a basic glamping situation. All previous reviews are accurate. Property was unkempt, it was an active wildlife refuge at one point, but is long closed, the website is not accurate. You can tell that there was a lot of pride and love put into the refuge, but apparently it fell on hard times. Yep, the bed was an old futon with a box spring and mattress on top, yep it squeaked when you moved. There was mouse poop everywhere, it is a cabin in the woods, you will have that. We borrowed(Army reallocated) a couple of chairs from the main building as the cabin did not have any camp chairs, I would have expected a couple of Adirondack chairs. The grill worked but was a Walmart special that looked as if it was going to fall apart at any moment. The fire ring was a janky set up that was held up by an old log. The bottled water in the water maker probably was refilled from the city tap(not a huge deal). We had towels, but no washrags. The fridge was sufficient but did freeze some of our food. The bathroom was unkempt, dirty, trash overflowed by the end of our 4th day and the toilet was loose in its seat and was leaking out of the wax ring, but the shower was great. We made the best of it, and ultimately had a great time.

Lost money because could not stay second night

It had the potential to be charming. The worst was the bed. It is not a bed. It is a queen futon on a twin frame. The sides by the head and feet are raised, and your torso is sunken in the futon mattress. It would have been more comfortable on the floor! But, the floors had dog hair all over. There was dust everywhere. I dropped something off the dresser, which was covered in dust when I picked it up. The shower was in a bathroom in the main building, which was also not clean. We returned from a very long hike late in the evening, packed up our stuff and left. It was very expensive for what it was.

Unique and Beautiful

The Wolf dome was perfect for a glamping vacation. It was so nice having drinking water and a washing machine/dryer. Grounds were very interesting to hike through. The view from the dock is stunning and the scenery for campfires/hottub is just what we were hoping for. Steve is very friendly and knowledgeable of the local wildlife.

Horror movie and mildew

The wolf dome itself was pretty accurate in its description but there should be a warning sign when entering the bed and stepping on the frame around it. The bed was sooo loud anytime you moved and was simply a futon with a TERRIBLE mattress put on top of it . The bathrooms were fine for what its worth but the hot tub and sauna and kayaks were a pretty decent walk to get to and the sauna wasnt even started. As soon as the top was taken off the hot tub it smelt purely of mold but appeared clean so we still used it but our bathing suits smelt like mildew after along with my hair which is disgusting . The kayaks would have been great if the dock was in and i wasnt expected to run and jump into it 4 feet down .. and hope your not expecting animals .... i will say the bathrobes were AMAZING . Also bring anti itch cream for the body rash you will leave with.

A Unique Experience

This was a neat and unique place to stay. The yurt stayed warm even though it was cold out. The style and decorations inside the yurt were fun. Not so great was a very uncomfortable bed, yurt floor that was dirty, and toilet that looked like it had not been cleaned in a whole.

Secluded get away

This was an awesome secluded yurt. We enjoyed the hot tub which was a short drive away. The bathrooms were clean, and the shower pressure was awesome. The bed could have been more comfortable, but it worked. There were lots of amazing places to see and eat. We will definitely consider booking this again when we go to Lake Placid.

A little slice away from it all

Great place! Funky little geodesic dome/yurt that was perfect. It got down to -19 and we were perfectly comfortable. Mimosas in the horn the next morning at a balmy 8 with Whiteface in the background, was just the perfect cherry on top.I will say this…if you’re expecting luxury, this is not for you! It’s a cabin/yurt, in the woods. Be realistic!

Eh

Although the the dome is located on beautiful woodsy property, it isn’t exactly as advertised. We found the floor to be really dirty, could not walk around without shoes on. There is not as much wildlife on the property as listed. We saw the animals inside, and a pig and chickens outside. The hot tub was very clean. There is a great view on the river. Overall, not for everyone I guess it depends what you’re there for.

Lovely

Secluded and quiet. Love being in the middle of the mountains with few people around listening to the sounds of nature. The yurt was clean and simple, but classically decorated, stayed warm even through the chill outside. The bed is hard but surprisingly slept great on it despite that. Owner is communicative and answered questions in detail that I had. Will come back for sure.

Les points faibles : Propreté

Completely misrepresented

This property was not what was showcased on VRBO. The washroom is not connected to the dome/ cabin.it is a shared washroom with the bear cabin and other visitors. It is a good 2-3 min walk from the dome till the animal refugee shelter and it stinks of animals. The hot tub is also extremely far and deep inside the property(3min drive from the dome) with not much privacy. The wolf dome itself was very unclean from inside. There is a weird moist smell and webs everywhere and it seems like it hasn’t been cleaned in quite a long time. I hope everything is atleast written in the description so people know what they are booking. With the snow and everything slippery, washroom trips were the most inconvenient.
