Fold back the 20-foot glass door at Hikari House and the living room opens onto five untouched acres between Copper Mountain and the boulders. Dip in the saltwater plunge pool facing Copper Mountain, eat lunch under 100-year-old olive trees, then carry a drink from the 1970s bar down to the sunken fire pit as the sky goes dark. Plaster, Shou Sugi Ban and artisan details shape this off-grid, three-queen-bedroom home. Imperfect, on purpose.
The Space:
Hikari House is a modern desert home on five acres of untouched Mojave desert, inspired by the Japanese wabi-sabi idea of simplicity and natural imperfection. Plaster finishes, Shou Sugi Ban accents and artisan details meet walls of glass and a 20-foot bifold door that opens the living space to the views. The palette stays quiet, with warm earth tones, black leather, dark wood and soft lamplight, so the desert outside does most of the talking. Outside, a saltwater plunge pool, a sunken conversation fire pit and two outdoor dining areas sit among boulders and old olive trees. With three queen bedrooms and two full bathrooms, one bedroom in an attached glass casita, it suits small groups of up to six. Mix something at the 1970s bar and carry it down to the conversation pit.

-Outdoor Amenities-
Five acres of open Mojave desert surround the house. Start the morning with a cold dip in the private saltwater plunge pool, UV and ozone filtered, with Copper Mountain and the boulders in view. Find a lounger in the sun or a spot in the shade and let the afternoon go slowly.
Set lunch beneath the 100-year-old olive trees, or keep it close on the back patio. As the light turns gold, path lights come on along the gravel, and the sunken conversation pit becomes the place to be, gathered around the fire as the sky moves from gold to starlit black. The dark skies here are some of the clearest in California, so stay out for them.
-Living Area-
High ceilings, full walls of glass and a 20-foot bifold door open the living space to the desert. Fold the door back in the morning, settle into a black leather sling chair with your coffee and watch the light come up over the land. In the evening, the 65-inch Frame TV and Sonos surround system are ready for a film, and books and games are on hand for a slower night.
-Kitchen and Dining-
The kitchen centers on a sleek island, with a Gaggenau refrigerator, Bosch 500 and 800 Series appliances, an induction cooktop and a convection oven for real cooking. Grind beans at the coffee station, brew Joshua Tree Coffee Co. coffee in the Fellow drip maker and pull up a seat at the breakfast bar. Just off the kitchen, the vintage 1970s custom bar, a carved wood cabinet stocked with cocktail and wine glassware, is where the evening begins. Two outdoor dining areas wait for sunset dinners.
-Bedrooms and Bathrooms-
Hikari House has three bedrooms, each with a queen bed, organic mattress and bamboo linens, and two full bathrooms. The Primary Suite has sliding glass doors to a sunrise-facing outdoor space, where an antique limestone coffee table sits among gold gravel and sage, so you can take your first cup outside before anyone else is up. It also has a dedicated workspace and an ensuite with dark plaster, Shou Sugi Ban accents, heated floors and a walk-in shower.
The Desert Nest has sculpted textured walls, blackout curtains and views of sage and olive trees. The Horizon Room is an attached casita off the front patio, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, with blackout shades and its own mini-split; it has no attached bathroom. The second bathroom has a skylight that fills it with soft daylight.
-Surrounding Area-
Hikari House sits between Copper Mountain and the boulder landscapes of Joshua Tree. Downtown Joshua Tree and downtown Twentynine Palms are both close by, with the park's West Entrance an easy drive for a morning of hiking among the rock formations. Come back for a cold plunge and an early dinner under the olive trees. The last 0.6 miles to the house are dirt road.
