This abandoned train depot was constructed by the State of Georgia in 1848, and is one of the oldest in Georgia. The depot witnessed many important events during the Civil War; a speech by Confederate President Jefferson Davis in 1861; the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862; a Civil War battle; and the first headquarters of General William T. Sherman during his Atlanta Campaign.
Constructed in 1849, the Western & Atlantic depot at Ringgold is one of the state's oldest rail stations. In 1862 Andrews' Raiders came through town in the locomotive General followed closely by their pursuers in the Texas. Andrews' unsuccessful attempt to disrupt Confederate rail operations came to an end two miles to the north of here. After sustaining damage from Union artillery during the November 27, 1863 Battle of Ringgold, the 14-inch dark sandstone walls of the building were repaired with light-colored limestone blocks, giving the depot a distinct two-toned appearance.
This is an awesome little botanical garden. Ruby (creator and owner) is so sweet and greets you when you pull in. I only have a few pictures that likely does it no justice. Enjoy the gardens and purchase plants. http://www.chattanoogahosta.org/bethlehem.html
