Three months ago there was a major earthquake which hit Kumamoto. Takachiho Gorge is in Kumamoto prefecture. I was scheduled to arrive some 2 weeks later but had to postpone trip till now coz many roads were damaged.

Currently some part of this gorge is still closed. The boat rowing below also closed as water is too high I was told. Still, it's been a place I had wanted to see for many years and am happy to finally made it and hence marked the completion of my tour of all the 47 prefectures of Japan! Hurray!!!

Without the boats and people in the water, it is a little difficult to appreciate how big the gorge is! May be next time!

a beautiful place to go
The afternoon sunlight filtering through the lush green of the trees on this bridge leading to Amanoyasugawara Shrine was a sight to behold. I've always loved the more quieter trails that lets you appreciate nature. The sounds of birds and insects combined with the steady susurrus of the stream makes the entire walk even more magical. The aforementioned shrine is a simple shrine inside a large cave believed to be where the gods and goddesses met to discuss their strategy of luring the goddess Amaterasu from her hiding place and bring back light into the world.

Protip: At the start of the trail leading to the shrine, right beside the main road, is a shop that sells souvenirs and these amazing sandwiches with local beef and chicken products in it that taste absolutely delicious. That, and their mushroom tea is a must try.
Takachiho Gorge (é«˜ćƒç©‚ćłĄ, Takachiho-kyƍ) is a narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River. Volcanic basalt columns line the sheer cliffs of the gorge, originally as a result of Mt. Aso’s eruption and further shaped through time by the flowing river, creating interesting shapes and patterns.
.
The 17-meter Manai Falls is probably the highlight of the tour, as it cascades into the river below and along with the gorge and the bridge makes for a very picturesque location. Normally, boat rides are offered to visitors but during the day of our visit it was temporarily stopped due to the high waters brought about by the recent typhoon.
