This vacation rental experience turned into a living nightmare. The rental itself was well located, clean, and well appointed. It was the transaction that turned a good experience bad. Within 30 minutes of our checkout, I received an email notification from the property manager that she had found extensive damage to the exterior of the property, which she claimed we had covered up with the trash cans. She indicated that she would file a claim against our accidental damage insurance policy and we would not have any negative repercussions because of our coverage. Minutes later I received notice from the third-party insurance company of the claim, citing a large and unsubstantiated amount in damages. This was completely fabricated. Within a 30-minute period she messaged me, indicating that they pulled camera footage and would be removing the claim from our account since it was determined that it was not related to our party. I learned later that it took over a week for her to do that. In the meantime, our security deposit was frozen, pending investigation. For the next 27 days I spent over 12 hours on the phone and chat with VRBO to make the case for the release of our sizeable security deposit. I was told to wait over and over, given no contact options other than the online help desk who simply reiterated script answers that directed me to wait even longer. First, the disclosed 14-day wait period for security deposit release. Then, 5-7 days for “bank processing”, then an additional 6 days for who knows what? The property owner pointed to VRBO, and VRBO pointed to the property owner. In the end, after nearly a month of persistence, my funds were released. Anyone who considers this property (or VRBO, for that matter) should think long and hard. I will never do business with VRBO again.
