Visiting Thirunelli Temple is still one of my favorite experiences I've had in India so far. Thirunelli Temple is located in the area of Wynard outside of Kalpetta. While somewhat difficult to get around, Wynard is a nature reserve and absolutely beautiful. I recommend renting a taxi for the day (which is pretty cheap to do in India and your hotel/hostel can help you set it up). My taxi driver was a Hindu who frequents the temple. We took our shoes off and left them with the pile of shoes at the bottom of the stairs and began to climb. I was under the belief that only Hindus were allowed inside the temple, but he beaconed for me to follow. In broken English, he introduced each of the gods to me and showed me how to receive a blessing and the tilaka (a mark on the forehead made with clay). It was one of those places where you could feel a palpable energy in the air. Hindus from all over India will come and make the pilgrimage to this temple and I'm honored that they allowed me to be a part of it. Always be respectful and mindful, but if you have a chance to go inside the temple, take it. #troveon #india #indiatravel #kerala #wynard #wynardnaturereserve #thirunellitemple #krishna
Thrissilery Shiva Temple, Wayanad Legend has it that those who offer rituals for their ancestors at Thirunelli are aware that these proceedings aren't complete without making an offering at the historic Thrissilery Shiva Temple. Situated about 19 km from Thirunelli, the temple itself is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Popular for its unique architectural proportions and a quiet and secluded ambience, devotees and visitors alike throng to the temple in hordes. Here one also finds a small shrine of Jala Durga, located in a water body that originates from the Papanashini River near Thirunelli. Locals believe that the shrine was installed by Lord Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
