They cover about 212 square kilometers and are exploited for lithium, potassium and sodium. Some native people also exploit it manually for salt and you can visit the salt baths and buy salt. The road to get there starts in the province of Jujuy and is rather windy. It is however asphalted and if you continue in it, you will arrive in Chile, in the Atacama dessert.
