Situated on a side street in the small market town of Coldstream, Wall Cottage is ideal for a relaxed rural escape with several lovely cafés, pubs and historic sites on its doorstep. Located on the northern bank of the River Tweed, this historic town is famed for originating the Coldstream Guards – the oldest regiment in the British Army. Today, it’s a peaceful spot for a riverside retreat and enjoys one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the country. Northumberland lies just over the water, so visitors here couldn’t be better placed to explore both the rivers and ruined abbeys of the Scottish Borders and the dramatic coastline and remote hills of the North of England.
Enter the cottage through the front door and step into the inner hall, where you’ll spot a hanging rail and under-stair storage space as well as a ground-floor shower room and utility room on the right. The kitchen lies through a door to the left and is well-equipped for preparing meals, featuring spacious wooden countertops, cream cabinets and a ceramic hob. You’ll find the round dining table to the side in the open-plan living space, beside the folding doors which bring the outside in, as well as a green sofa and terracotta loveseat which are topped with patterned cushions and joined by a coffee table.
The central staircase in the inner hall leads up to the bedrooms on the first floor. With soft-pink walls, gently sloping eaves and a king size bed with crisp white linen, the master bedroom is a calming place to unwind. An ensuite bathroom lies next door and features a combined bath and shower. With light-blue walls and a striped upholstered headboard above another king size bed, the second bedroom is equally colourful and welcoming.
Outside, the enclosed rear garden is a combination of patio, gravel and raised planters. Featuring a raised upper terrace and home to outdoor furniture throughout the spring and summer, it’s perfect for dining al fresco on warm evenings. A gate leads to the secure enclosed parking area which is accessed via an electronic key fob and shared with Windy Cottage, which sits under the same ownership.
In addition to exploring the town and strolling along the banks of the Tweed, there’s also plenty to keep you occupied nearby. The Hirsel, a beautiful stately home set within a 500-acre park with lake and river trails, sits on the edge of town. Ideal for a long dog-walk, it boasts spectacular rhododendrons, an azalea wood and swathes of daffodils in the spring. For more days out, why not head west and discover the Stichill Linn waterfall or the Borders’ abbeys – such as the magnificent ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, the burial place of Sir Walter Scott – or cross the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne which is just half an hour away.
