Thereâs no shortage of iconic landmarks in Brighton. The Royal Pavilion is a palace like no other, brimming with decadence and Eastern inspiration, and rich with stories of its former occupant, the party-loving Prince Regent. Right next door is Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, and between the two are the Pavilion Gardens, a perfect place to picnic in the summer or go ice skating in the winter.
With eight miles of beach stretching from Shoreham to the picturesque village of Rottingdean, you can always find a quiet spot to sit and read or go for a swim. Youâre also never far from a green space in Brighton â the city has seven Green Flag parks to choose from. But if you really need to get out into some wide open space, the South Downs National Park is a 30 minute bus journey from the centre of town, and with its International Dark Sky Reserve status, itâs also a great place to go star-gazing at night. With Stanmer Park in one direction and the dramatic landscape of Devilâs Dyke in the other, youâre just a short bus or cycle ride away from some quality green-bathing.
Brighton is also a great base from which to explore the historic towns of Lewes and Arundel with their medieval castles, stunningly beautiful Cuckmere Haven and the Seven Sisters Country Park, the Bluebell Railway and numerous Sussex vineyards, that are now rivalling the Champagne region in France for their award-winning sparkling wines.
Getting Around:
One of the easiest ways to get around Brighton and Hove is by bus. All buses have disabled-access and can take you all over the city from Hove Lagoon to the Marina, or from Brighton Station to Devilâs Dyke in the South Downs National Park. If youâre heading from Brighton to Hove, there are lots of bus routes that run between the two or you can hop on a direct train (itâs one stop). There are taxi ranks and bike hire points at both stations. In fact, bike hire points can be found all over the city, including the parks, and while many roads have dedicated cycle lanes, one of the easiest and most enjoyable bike rides you can do is along the seafront, where a cycle lane stretches from Hove Lagoon to Volkâs Electric Railway. Brighton is the last stop on a train line that links directly with London Victoria, Clapham Junction and East Croydon, as well as being linked with London Bridge, London Kings Cross and the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras International on a different line. Journey times vary depending on the number of stops, but from London Kings Cross it takes around 1h 15mins, while from London Victoria it can take as little as 48 minutes. London Gatwick Airport sits about halfway between London Victoria and Brighton, meaning you can get from Gatwick to Brighton by train in approximately 30 minutes.
Brighton is also a 30 minute train journey or a 45 minute bus ride from the nearby port of Newhaven, from where ferries run regularly to Dieppe. Itâs also easily accessible from the ports of Southampton, Portsmouth and Dover.
