Most residences at Mountain Thunder Lodge have a balcony. 5103 is on the first floor and has a private patio facing the ski-back trail behind the building. In the morning you see the first skiers come down, and around four you watch everyone ski home. That's you too, on the days you ski back to the building yourself.

Getting to the mountain is easy. An underground walkway runs from the building to the BreckConnect Gondola, so you don't walk along the road in ski boots. The gondola takes you up to Peaks 7 and 8. Main Street and City Market are each a short walk, about 0.4 miles in a straight line. Since you're on the first floor, there are no elevators or stairs between the garage and your door.

The residence: King in the bedroom, Queen sleeper sofa in the living room, gas fireplace, full kitchen, dining for four, fast Wi-Fi, smart TV. It sleeps four, and it's at its best for a couple or a small family.

The lodge: a heated outdoor pool and hot tub in the courtyard, open all winter. It also has a fitness room with real equipment, guest laundry, courtyard gas grills, and one dedicated space in the secure underground garage. You can also use the pools at One Ski Hill Place at the base of Peak 8, and a resort shuttle runs between the two.

Good to know: ski-in depends on the trail being open, usually mid-December to mid-April. No pets, no smoking, minimum renter age 25.
