We were fortunate enough to be the first guests at Stephan and Nela's new Avignon apartment. First off, Stephan and Nela are attentive and gracious hosts. Since we were the first guests, there were a couple of quirks to work out, such as getting the washer to work for the first time, but Stephan was there within a few minutes to get things working. He is very receptive, kind, and easy to work with and very prompt to answer any questions we had. The compact, but well-designed apartment has been newly remodeled from top to bottom and is quite beautiful. We felt completely at-home, safe and comfortable there at all times. There are custom touches everywhere, lovely tile and hardwood floors, luxury linens, and antiques. The bathroom is large by European standards, and has a lovely full-size, walk-in shower. The kitchen is small, but we were able to cook and eat our breakfasts at the table easily. We loved the well-stocked Nespresso machine.
Location: The location is a short 10 minute walk to Les Halles market (great bread, salami, cheese, veggies) and even closer many of Avignon's restaurants so it was easy to walk all over during the day and night. Wear sturdy shoes because most of Avignon is cobblestones! Stephan is a wealth of information about the entire area and was always available to us. He speaks perfect English and French as well as several other languages. We rented a car, but did not want to drive into the walled part of Avignon (tiny, confusing streets), so we sometimes parked at the free lot at Ile de Piot which has a free shuttle back and forth across the bridge to Avignon and then about a 15 minute pleasant walk . Some days we preferred parking at Palais des Papes lot even though it was about $18/day because we were exhausted from sightseeing all day and it was only a 5 minute walk back to the apartment. Avignon is the most central location to stay while seeing Provence. We drove only the back roads (no highways) and easily visited Chateauneuf du Pape, Orange, Gordes, Arles, St. Remy, L’Isle sur la Sorgue, and Uzes among others. Beautiful drives!
When, not if we go back to Avignon, we will definitely try to stay at one Stephan and Nela’s places again. We not only enjoyed the apartment, but felt like we established a trusting friendship with this caring couple.
