Doesn't honour confirmed stay

I booked two nights here through Hotels.com and received a confirmation of booking. I booked this specific hotel because it is only a few minutes from my daughter's house and it was her wedding. I arrived on the first day, dragged my bag up a flight of stairs dotted with cigarette ends, and was surprised to find myself in a bar! Continued through and found a counter which seemed to be reception. I stood there for about 5 minutes while various members of staff wandered past between bar and kitchen and kitchen and office and totally ignored me. Finally, after ringing the bell, someone deigned to recognise my existence. However, I was told I had been "out booked" for the 2nd night to a hotel in the city centre; evidently there had been a group booking for two weeks which elbowed mine out. According to the person dealing with me, "the owners keep doing this". It makes commercial sense, but hits rock bottom for customer service. I left, actually rather glad I wasn't staying if that was how paying customers were treated. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone; you may think you have somewhere to stay but you can't rely on them to honour your booking. I actually think Hotels.com should drop them from their listings for this reason. (This site requires a response for cleanliness & comfort of room to publish. As I didn't stay I have put '1', but this is only for convenience and does not reflect actual experience.)

It was so nice I stayed the following week and think I will make it a regular stopover for Runcorn visits.nice bar, great food , early bird menu and superb choice of interesting courses.

Les + : Megan in the bar was attentive, helpful and really pleasant.
Les - : Check the room facilities regularly and look after those little things that make all the difference. Please answer friendly and constructive E-mails.
Situation : Take a stroll in and around Sefton Park. Great area both scenically and for restaurants, etc..
The staff were excellent, but the room was cramped, cold and a big let-down. Some lights didn't work and the shower was a 'trickle'. However, the noise from the creaking loo had us in hysterics every time! I did write to tell them afterwards, but have had no response.

Friendly Staff

Came here for some quality time with my partner . We had a really nice stay we booked a standard double room but were upgraded to a Suite . The staff were really nice and friendly and made us feel very welcome . We even got a lift to nearby lark lane by one of the staffs mother's who was picking her daughter up . Overall was very impressed and wouldnt hesitate to go back.

Excellent budget hotel in a perfect location adjacent to Sefton Park. Warm welcome from very friendly staff and a lovely Italian restaurant on site. Nice bar and free parking.

Getting worse

This was our third stay in three years. The first was very good and we had no complaints. Last year there was a slip in the quality of service and we asked for a few things to be put right. The staff are always friendly and welcoming but this year, things have slipped. Our room was not properly serviced (the bins were emptied and the cups were washed but the bed was not made). The shower door did not close properly. My son's mattress in another room was damaged and there were no bedside lamps in his room. There was a wedding at the hotel over the two days and inevitable the noise and music continued until 2am. Never again!
