We had a wonderful relaxing visit at this house in the quiet village of Arco da Calheta. I found the comments of some of the previous reviews very accurate, with a few additional points. The layout of the house is terrific for a large or extended family group like ours. Lots of social room space, well laid out. A good mix of privacy and being all together. We were a family group with some teens and some grownup “children” with their partners. The pool was great for us, but might be considered not so safe if you have small children needing supervision. There is no gate between the pool and the house and no pool cover, for example. The kitchen was pretty well set up for cooking for large groups. Thank you for all the different coffee makers! When you have lots of coffee drinkers in the house, that was much appreciated! The house is right next to the main road through the village, so if you are sensitive to exhaust fumes, there is a bit of a morning and evening “rush hour” of trucks and scooters, but the afternoons and nights are absolutely quiet. The house is also next to the village church which tolls every quarter hour during the day from 7:30am and tolls enthusiastically before scheduled mass, like on Sunday morning. However, some of our group loved that the church was also a Pokemon Go hotspot that local young people also visit in the evenings so that was a fun and I guess modern discovery! The village is very convenient for touring around the island. I agree with another reviewer that there is really only safe parking for one car, so we are glad we planned around that. The local people are amazing gardeners. We are gardeners too so it was wonderful to walk and drive around and see the marvellous variety of flowers, vegetables and fruit trees. The house doesn’t have any flowers to speak of and if we stayed again, I would probably stop at a nursery and buy some pot plants so I would not feel so jealous of the homes surrounding us. It does have a reasonable plot with some fresh growing herbs which was nice for cooking, plus really good mint I can recommend for making mojitas with the Madeiran rum. Final note is that the house does not have a view. Personally that wasn’t a problem as the restaurants we went to had fantastic views (can especially recommend Convento das Vinhas for grilled fish, and Zarcos in Funchal for steak and cocktails), but one person in our group was sad about it.
