“Charming historical San Francisco hotel - centrally located”
We came into town for an office holiday party and did not wish to have to drive home afterwards. This hotel exceeded my expectation for a budget hotel just a few blocks from Union Square. The building pre-dates the Great Quake, with the original elevator working perfectly. Because of its age, hotel guests should have the right attitude when making comparisons. We found the hotel decor very charming and we were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a king bed room with a bay window facing the street. The room and bathroom are small but functional, and we found it even romantic. Our rate included free internet service and free continental breakfast ready for you outside your door in the morning. Valet parking is cheaper than any overnight parking you can find in the neighborhood.
“Small, charming hotel in a very convenient location”
Great hotel, just be sure to get a larger room. The small room is too small, but the other rooms are fine. Don't expect a 5 star hotel, but a very decent, older hotel with a very accommodating and friendly staff.
“Comfortable and Helpful”
Stayed here in December 2011 for a week. A single room, small, but with lots of lamps to read by, television, bathroom with tub and shower and good lighting. Staff was helpful with how to get where and to print out boarding passes. Neighborhood is a little patchy but just a couple of blocks from Union Square. I would stay here again.
“Great value for San Francisco”
The hotel is in a good lotcation and provides a comforatble (but not luxurious) stay in San Francisco. The room is small, but adequate and there are lots of extras that you will not get from the luxury hotels - free Wi-Fi, continental breakfast (excellent) and a free glass of wine at a near-by restaurant. If you aren't looking for luxury, this is a perfect solution.
“Ok if you get a good deal”
This is an old hotel with some charm, but also many flaws. The staff is friendly and there's a decent Italian restaurant on the property, with complimentary wine in the evening. I'm surprised some things meet building codes, though. The scares were scary to come down, and even though I was on the second floor I preferred to use the 105 year old elevator to come down. The bathroom in my room was tiny (my legs extended well underneath the sink while sitting on the toilet) and was also a six-inch step up from the bedroom! I can imagine that many people have tripped going to or from the bathroom in the middle of the night. The TV was a tiny monitor, with a chair immediately adjacent to it so that you could see it and operate the controls (the remote did not work). No ESPN so I couldn't watch Monday Night Football.
“Great service, older hotel”
Stayed 3 nights. Very friendly hotel staff and very helpful. Hotel is in an old building but rooms were comfortable and clean. No noise from other rooms but some noise from outside early in the morning. Great boutique hotel and great rOom rate through expedia. Close to union square and shops and restaurants.
“Good price and great location”
Good balance of a reasonable priced placed in a very good location.
“Cheap place, good location, friendly people”
Can't go wrong with here. Cheap, real vintage (building is restored... still has the old style elevators) and the receptionist was really helpful. The only complaint would be that I felt a little unsafe with the fire exit outside coming up to my window and there's no lock on the window. The walls are a little thin too. But I wasn't in the room all day to be affected. I'd definitely go there again. Had a great time. I'd ask for a room that's not having the window facing the outside fire exit :)
“Very decent and well located”
Narrow space and old facilities. On the other side warm reception and good service.
“Would be rated higher if the nighttime concierge would've even said "hello" let alone smile”
I chose this hotel b/c of the many reviews about its cleanliness despite its age, and they were all true. The room was clean (although I did pick a stem out of the comforter upon first arriving... but this is SF, after all) and the bathroom very clean despite its very aged appearance. The afternoon and weekend staff were very friendly and helpful, while the night guy made it feel like you were visiting a convent/morgue/church etc. rather than a comfortable place to crash after a long day. Here's a hint: When a guest (or anyone, for that matter) walks toward the elevator, try saying hi, or at least faking a smile. Still, satisfied and would stay here again if more cost-effective options weren't available.
