"Excellent location. Good value."
For those looking for good practical value, Tophams fits the bill very well. Fine location on quiet street in upscale neighborhood, just 3-4 minutes walk from Victoria Station, a tube stop on the key "District" line. Victoria has plenty of nearby shopping, including a useful Sainbury's grocery. Tophams is within easy walking distance to Buckingham Palace, and moderate walking distance to Westminster, Parliament, Churchill War Rooms, Whitehall, etc. Our room was smallish, but had a spacious modern bath with a good tub and separate shower. Two windows overlooked Ebury Street, which when left open provided excellent ventilation. The room was fairly modern, clean, well laid out. Continental breakfasts in the rather cramped but nearly elegant hotel dining room were a plus, although took some getting used to. Staff was a bit overwhelmed by crush between 9-10 am, but tried hard and were all very pleasant....... That said, the persnickety traveler will certainly find things to complain about Tohams. For example: although it didn't matter much to us, our TV didn't work for several days -- apparently a cable company problem. Luckily, when it was time to listen to election returns May 8, TV was fine. Overall, Tophams enhanced our 8-day stay in London. It's strategic location made it easier to get around, and the room served as a very acceptable refuge when we were beat. I would certainly stay there again and recommend it to others, though not to those with distinctly high-end tastes.
